120 Bahadur: Bollywood Film Revives the Forgotten Rezang La Battle of the 1962 India-China War

A recent Bollywood film has reignited national interest in one of the most heroic yet often overlooked chapters of the 1962 India-China war. Titled 120 Bahadur—meaning Brave Hearts—the film brings to life the legendary Battle of Rezang La, fought in the freezing heights of Ladakh.

Starring Farhan Akhtar as Major Shaitan Singh, the movie narrates the extraordinary courage of Indian soldiers who made a last stand at the Rezang La pass, located more than 16,000 feet above sea level in the Himalayas. While the film did not perform well at the box office, it has succeeded in drawing attention to a battle widely regarded as the only moral victory for India during the 1962 Sino-Indian conflict.
“We felt it was crucial that this story be told to honour the men who lived it,” said dialogue writer Sumit Arora. “Though we took a few cinematic liberties, the film remains deeply faithful to historical facts.”

The 1962 war between India and China erupted after years of escalating border tensions and failed diplomatic talks. Relations worsened further after India granted asylum to the Dalai Lama following the 1959 Tibetan uprising, a move that angered Beijing.
Hostilities began on 20 October 1962, when Chinese forces launched coordinated attacks across the disputed Himalayan frontier. China described the offensive as a “self-defence counter-attack,” accusing India of territorial encroachment and airspace violations.

By the time China declared a unilateral ceasefire in November—pulling back troops and releasing prisoners of war—India had suffered the loss of nearly 7,000 soldiers and around 38,000 square kilometres of territory. The conflict resulted in the creation of the Line of Actual Control (LAC), a poorly demarcated 3,440-km boundary that still shapes India-China relations today.

China has largely remained silent about the war, consistently claiming it eliminated all Indian positions and never officially acknowledging the Rezang La battle. In contrast, India remembers Rezang La as an epic last stand, where vastly outnumbered Indian troops fought to the end, embodying unmatched bravery and sacrifice.

Decades later, 120 Bahadur ensures that the heroism of Rezang La is not forgotten—cementing its place in Indian military history as one of the greatest battles ever fought by the Indian Army.
