Taxpayers in Rhode Island, Alaska, and Maine face a mid-July deadline to file their taxes, while some taxpayers in Massachusetts have until July 31, 2024.
Taxpayers in three states face a mid-July deadline to file their taxes or make payments for the 2023 year after extensions were given due to federal disaster declarations, according to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
Deadlines and Affected Areas
Residents and businesses in Maine, Rhode Island, and Alaska must submit their 2023 taxes by Monday, July 15, the IRS announced in a recent news release. These extensions were granted due to disaster declarations for severe storms, landslides, mudslides, and flooding between November 2023 and January 2024.
The IRS specified that residents in affected areas automatically receive the extra time without needing to request it. These areas include:
- Alaska: The Wrangell Cooperative Association of Alaska Tribal Nation due to landslides, storms, and mudslides in November.
- Maine: Eight counties—Cumberland, Hancock, Knox, Lincoln, Sagadahoc, Waldo, Washington, and York—due to storms and flooding in January.
- Rhode Island: Four counties—Kent, Newport, Providence, and Washington—due to storms and flooding in December.
Automatic Extensions and Contact Information
The IRS emphasized that residents of these counties do not need to contact the tax agency to file their documents, as the extensions were granted automatically. However, if affected taxpayers receive a late filing or late payment penalty notice, they should call the number on the notice to have the penalty abated.
Other Affected Areas and Deadlines
- Massachusetts: Taxpayers in Bristol and Worcester counties have until July 31 to file their taxes.
- Hawaii: Those impacted by the historic fires in Hawaii and Maui counties have until August 7 to file their taxes.
- Ohio: Taxpayers in Auglaize, Crawford, Darke, Delaware, Hancock, Licking, Logan, Mercer, Miami, Richland, and Union counties have until September 3 to file their taxes.
- International: Taxpayers in Israel or those impacted by last year’s Hamas terrorist attacks have until October 7, 2024, to file and pay their taxes.
Additional Extensions
If residents in the impacted areas need more time, they can apply for a new extension using IRS Form 4868, which must be submitted via paper. Electronic filing options are not available after the April 15 deadline. Disaster-area taxpayers who file this form will have until October 15 to file their returns, but tax payments are still due by the July 15 deadline.
Oklahoma Residents
Residents of several Oklahoma counties have until November 1 to file their taxes and make payments due to federal disaster declarations for severe storms, straight-line winds, tornadoes, and flooding that started in mid-May. This relief includes the filing of Form 5500 series returns required to be filed on or after May 19, 2024, and before November 1, 2024.
